Acts 2:1-2

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.

The word “Pentecost” referred to a minor Jewish agricultural festival that took place fifty days after Passover. Christians have co-opted that word to mean the day the Holy Spirit was poured out upon the disciples. It happened on a Sunday which had become the day the disciples would always get together as they waited “to be clothed with power from on high”. Sunday, after all, was the day Jesus was resurrected.

I like that they were being faithful while they waited. They were given no indication of God’s timing, but they kept doing the weekly gathering to worship together and pray.

You have probably noticed that most of life is fairly uneventful day after day. But then comes the day when things fall into place in a new way and life is propelled in a brand-new direction… things like a new opportunity at work; getting married; or becoming pregnant. It is easy to see God at work in those seasons of change, but it is in the in-between times that our faithfulness becomes so important. Like those first disciples who gathered weekly, it is good for us as well to help each other keep our eyes on Jesus, looking for what he is bringing next into our lives.

– Pr. Paul

Lord Jesus, thank you that you haven’t called us to walk this road alone. Thank you for the gift of other brothers and sisters in Christ. Stir my heart to be with others so that we can strengthen each other. Amen.
