Hebrews 3:1-6
Moses a Servant, Christ a Son
3 Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, partners in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, 2 who was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses also “was faithful in all God’s house.” 3 Yet Jesus is worthy of more glory than Moses, just as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. 4 (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) 5 Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that would be spoken later. 6 Christ, however, was faithful over God’s house as a son, and we are his house if we hold firm the boldness and the pride inspired by hope.
I can still remember the first time my dad let me drive the fishing boat while we were trolling. We were salmon fishing, pulling big rigs that required smooth, gentle turns. Needless to say, there was a moment when I didn’t yet understand just how gentle those turns needed to be—and we got all twisted up. That’s when my dad taught me (this was before boats could steer themselves with GPS) to pick a landmark across the lake and fix my eyes on it as I steered.
It was amazingly effective. There was wind, big waves, and the occasional fishing boat to navigate around, but I could always regain my bearings by returning my focus to that landmark.
I think the same principle applies to discipleship. Jesus calls us to join his mission—to become “fishers of people.” And like the lake I was navigating, the waters we move through can be choppy: competing priorities, distractions, difficult relationships, and real suffering. The mission continues, but we need a steady point of reference.
That’s why we must fix our eyes on Jesus. Doing so doesn’t mean we won’t need wisdom in the moment. It means that when we get bumped off course, we know where to look to find our way back. Over the long arc of a lifetime with God, “getting back on track” is often what you’ll notice most—and what others will notice in you.
So what waters are you navigating these days? And what practices help you fix your eyes on Jesus—so you can keep moving forward and find your way back when you drift?

Jesus, thank you for being a landmark in our journey of faith. Give me the courage to be a fisher of men and the trust to point my boat ever in your direction. Amen.
