Matthew 10:35-37

Jesus taught: “For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law, and one’s foes will be members of one’s own household. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.”

Anybody getting the idea that Jesus is a bit of a trouble-maker??

Jesus—the person as well as his teachings—certainly has raised havoc in households through the centuries. Becoming a Christian was something that could get you and your family killed in 1st century Rome or in 20th century China.

But the problem is more subtle in 21st century Sioux Falls. Oftentimes it is the interpretation of Jesus or the scripture that can cause strife in a family. One family member may value a powerful, politically charged, nationalistic Jesus where another may value a gentle, pacifist, passive Jesus. This definitely sounds like the verses above.

I once heard a pastor say that when Jesus starts to sound just like you, it probably isn’t Jesus. Jesus comforts the challenged and challenges the comfortable. So when I read scripture or hear a sermon, I should feel loved and convicted at the same time.

Jesus, thank you for knowing what I need at any given moment. Sometimes I need tough love and sometimes I need a hug. Remind me that those around me are the same! Amen
