Matthew 10:24-25
Jesus taught: “A disciple is not above the teacher nor a slave above the master; it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher and the slave like the master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household!”
We are continuing in our series BLESS THIS MESS this week, focusing on how we can find true peace in Jesus. So throughout this week we will be reading little pericopes—snippets of scripture—that teach us something about Jesus and ourselves!
Today, Jesus reflects on the very fact that because we are his disciples, we will be maligned and misunderstood. The word disciple literally means “to sit at the feet of someone”; and we who call ourselves Christians sit at the feet of Christ, just like Peter, Thomas and Mary almost 2000 years ago.
When we say, “God is love,” or “God loved the whole world,” we are not inventing words; we are quoting what Jesus said. And think of how well all Jesus’ words were received back in the day…um, yeah, the religious leaders crucified him.
As Jesus teaches in this verse, he was called the devil by people in power in his time. He is warning the disciples—then and now—that we too may be told that we are crazy or sick or satanic when we follow Jesus and God’s unchanging love.

God, I hear today that there may be a cost of discipleship, in truly believing and living as though all this LOVE THE WORLD stuff is true! Help me be strong and brave! Amen
