John 17:2-3
Jesus prayed: “Since you have given him[Christ] authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”
In today’s part of The Priestly Prayer, Jesus speaks of authority. Jesus acknowledges that God has granted him the power, the ability, the authority to give life–something only God can do. The disciples must have been shocked! “Jesus has the same authority as YHWH??? Jesus can give eternal life?” They have walked with Jesus and have seen his miracles and have heard his teachings, but now it is all becoming clear; Jesus is not just a prophet (Elijah or John the Baptizer), he truly is the Son of God!
I believe that Jesus prayed to God over his disciples to remind them who he was and what he was about: Jesus is the Christ, the Savior, the Messiah, and he is on earth to bring the kingdom of God near, to bring new life and eternal life to all people.

Jesus, all life comes from you. You were present in the creation when the Word was spoken and all that is sprang into being. And you are present now, bringing life abundant to me now. Let me remember today that all good things come from you. Thank you! Amen
