Matthew 9:18-19
18 While he was saying these things to them, suddenly a leader came in and knelt before him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.” 19 And Jesus got up and followed him, with his disciples.
Obviously, Jesus’ dinner with the tax collectors had created a stir throughout the town. Everyone knew Jesus was there, including a respected leader of the community. Disaster had struck his family, and he didn’t care who Jesus was with; he just believed that Jesus could restore her life.
The Gospels are full of stories of people like this leader whose faith in Jesus made the impossible possible. He didn’t know what we would later come to know… that life doesn’t end with death. Jesus’ resurrection rewrote the ending to all of our stories. He only knew that his child had died, and he believed that Jesus could something about it.
I hope I could be like Jesus who was willing to go with this father who was in so much pain.

Lord Jesus, as I follow you and try to do the things you do, empower my heart to be willing to walk alongside others in their dark places, so that they may experience your love through my love and caring and find their hope in you. Amen.
