Isaiah 2:1-4

The Future House of God

2 The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

2 In days to come
    the mountain of the Lord’s house
shall be established as the highest of the mountains
    and shall be raised above the hills;
all the nations shall stream to it.
3     Many peoples shall come and say,
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
    to the house of the God of Jacob,
that he may teach us his ways
    and that we may walk in his paths.”
For out of Zion shall go forth instruction
    and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
4 He shall judge between the nations
    and shall arbitrate for many peoples;
they shall beat their swords into plowshares
    and their spears into pruning hooks;
nation shall not lift up sword against nation;
    neither shall they learn war any more.

This passage is a prophecy about where the flow of everything is headed. The image we get is threefold:

-God’s space will be the highest of all spaces. This is a short-hand way of saying that no nation will be more powerful or important than God.

-All of humanity will feel drawn to learn the way to be human from the wisdom of God—and not the nations.

-God will put an end to war and the core practice of that will be to turn weapons into agricultural tools.

There is a lot of talk about how our faith should connect with current events or global issues. What this passage, and others like it, demand of us as Jesus followers is that our ultimate vision be the guiding light to our present decisions.

If the point is that God is number one, then why would we put so much emphasis on any one nation?

If the point is that all people are called into one holy family, then why are we so bent on dividing people up?

If the point is that our fiercest technologies not be used to hurt but to harvest from God’s good earth, then why are we making so many more weapons?

At a certain point this passage begs Christians to stop the proverbial car and ask, “where are we going, anyway?”

This is a warranted question at this macro scale and it is warranted in the scale of your daily life.

If it is God that is to be number one, then why are you so set on achieving that in your community?

If community is the point, then why pursue people that are just like you?

If harvesting God from God’s abundance is the point, then why do we practice protecting our stuff so fiercely?

“Where are you going, anyway?”

This is a question that should cause you to pump the brakes and to reconsider your current decisions based on your future destination.

– Pr. Jason

God, help me to keep my eyes fixed on your future and not my own. Give me clarity when my vision is obstructed by brokenness in my heart and in the hearts of nations. Amen.
