Matthew 10:26-27
Jesus taught: “So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered and nothing secret that will not become known. What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops.”
How many times have we heard DO NOT BE AFRAID in the Bible? Lots! For which I am grateful, because I am basically a coward. Jesus has just reminded his disciples that there is a Cost of Discipleship (read the book by Dietrich Bonhoeffer—fabulous!) Then Jesus reminds us no to be afraid.
Then we hear this very hope-filled statement about secrets: All will be revealed! Everything will come to light; the intents of the hearts of the good and the evil will be made known. (This reminds me of that Old Testament understanding that vengeance belongs to the Lord; we need not worry what others do or say to us—all will out in the end. True intentions are shown in the light of God.)
In addition, all that Jesus teaches will be widely available to all who have ears to listen: the disciples will proclaim it! Jesus taught mostly to his disciples; they were the ones who walked with him for three years. Yes, there were crowds who heard him speak on occasion, but the Gospels were written by men who were there from the beginning and recorded what they saw and heard.
So how does this impact us? We were not there to hear Jesus preach! Well, our world is in a terrible state of Biblical illiteracy! We who know the Bible need to continue to learn and study so that we too can pass on what we know to those whom we love.

God, help me find my Bible today and put it in a place of prominence. I want to learn more of your story of love for the world. Help me challenge myself to read scripture this summer—like the whole Gospel of Matthew before Labor Day! Give me the will and the time! Thank you God. Amen
