Matthew 16:25-26 

“For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life?” 

Currently the richest person in the world is Elon Musk with an estimated net worth of $1.1 trillion. Musk is the founder of SpaceX, Tesla, and xAI. He is the first individual in history to surpass the trillion-dollar mark. He has more wealth at his disposal than any emperor ever had. 

Even if you had that kind of wealth, said Jesus, it would not do you any good when it comes to “buying” the life that Jesus was talking about. Real life, Jesus taught, comes from a completely different source. Which means you could have more money than you could ever possibly spend but still be bankrupt in the “what really matters” department.  

Obviously having some money makes life a whole lot easier than having no money. But the saying that “you can’t take it with you” still holds true. Because of Jesus, you and I have a “forever future”. Investing in that “forever future” is what Jesus is talking about, instead of spending all of our time and resources on whatever is immediately gratifying.

Lord Jesus, it is easy to get pulled into the pursuit of things instead of pursuing the well-being of those around me. Help me focus on you and by doing so “see” those in my life who need my compassion and love. Amen.
