Position Summary
The Minister of Spiritual Formation serves as a steward of Peace Lutheran Church’s discipleship culture by leading Discover Peace, the congregation’s person-centered spiritual formation strategy. This role cultivates shared practices, rhythms, and relationships that help individuals, groups, and the whole congregation practice the way of Jesus in sustainable, life-giving ways.
Working collaboratively with the Faith Formation Directors, Pastoral Team, and staff, the Minister of Spiritual Formation integrates spiritual formation across worship, groups, and communications—ensuring that people experience Peace as a guiding companion in their life of faith.
Discover Peace Leadership
Lead the ongoing development, implementation, and evolution of Discover Peaceas Peace Lutheran Church’s primary discipleship and engagement framework.
Ensure Discover Peace functions as a coherent ecosystem connecting individuals, groups, worship, communications, and partners.
Develop and steward a congregation way of following Jesus and equip groups and individuals to adapt it for their context and season of life.
Collaborate with staff and partner congregations to curate and create ministry opportunities that align with Discover Peace rhythms.
Discover Peace Guides
Recruit, train, support, and coach Discover Peace Guideswho accompany individuals in discernment, seasonal participation, and spiritual growth.
Design, coordinate, and primarily facilitate Discover Peace class with Adult Ministry Director and Pastoral Staff as back-up facilitators as needed.
Establish clear pathways for Guide conversations, follow-up, and seasonal re-engagement.
Equip Guides to help individuals develop livable, flexible personal ways of following Jesus using spiritual practices resources.
Spiritual Care & Direction
Provide spiritual care in ways that model and strengthen a culture of shared care, including prayer, presence, and spiritual companionship.
Work with - “youth and adult Faith Formation staff” to create a culture of common “call/vocation” language, - “develop individual and group-based materials to help discern God’s presence and call, and establish regular opportunities and practices of sharing personal stories of God’s work and call in our lives.”
Offer spiritual direction to individuals and train staff, Guides, and volunteers in basic spiritual accompaniment.
Group-Based Spiritual Formation
Collaborate with “Faith Formation staff” to cultivate group environments (house groups, life groups, interest groups, and future home-based groups) that embody the congregational way of following Jesus and shared spiritual practices.
Support staff to recruit, train, and coach group leaders as formation leaders, not simply facilitators.
Align group rhythms with the Discover Peace trimester calendar and seasonal ministry focus.
Worship Integration
Collaborate with the Pastoral Team, “Worship Team”, and “Adult Faith Formation” Director in worship planning to integrate Discover Peace practices and seasonal rhythms into services.
Share preaching responsibilities as appropriate, particularly in areas related to spiritual formation and discipleship.
Help the congregation experience worship as a formative practice connected to everyday life.
Communication & Resources
Collaborate with communications staff to ensure Discover Peace language, tone, and practices shape digital, print, and in-person communications.
Work with Faith Formation Directors to develop formation resources such as devotionals, podcasts, video scripts, digital classes, and written materials that support Discover Peace practices.
Help ensure that Peace’s communications consistently convey: “We’re here to help you discover your way of following Jesus.”
Leadership & Administration
Work with “pastoral team and Adult Faith Formation Director” to develop alternative funding sources such as grants to support ministry.
Participate in strategic planning with staff and leadership teams to align ministries with Discover Peace values and rhythms.
Develop systems and processes that support long-term sustainability, evaluation, and growth of formation efforts.
Qualifications
Degree in theology, spiritual formation, or a related field
Minimum of five years of leadership experience in a church, ministry, or nonprofit setting.
Experience teaching, preaching, or facilitating spiritual formation in a congregational context.
Demonstrated ability to develop systems and lead staff and volunteers.
Experience with Lutheran theology, education, and congregational life.
Proven ability to write and manage grants.
Experience in spiritual direction, coaching, or spiritual accompaniment strongly preferred
Skills & Competencies
A committed follower of Jesus with a deep, personal investment in practicing the way of Jesus.
Demonstrated passion for spiritual formation and accompanying people in faith development.
Strong relational communication, and training skills.
Proven ability to recruit, equip, and coach staff and volunteer leaders.
Systems thinker with experience designing and optimizing ministry processes.
Collaborative, teachable, adaptable, and able to thrive in a team-based environment.
Self-starter with strong organizational and administrative skills.
