Matthew 28:19
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
To be a disciple is to be a dedicated student of a trusted teacher. In the case of the early Christian church, that meant devotion to Jesus as rabbi, looking to him for instruction and wisdom on daily thought, word, and deed. Between the Israelite and Gentile community, there was often disagreement in what it meant to follow The Way of Jesus, especially when it came to cultural differences. And yet, in time, God’s people from every nation found a way to come together in Christ. At the foot of the cross, in the waters of baptism, in the taste of the bread and wine, we are all the same: beloved, forgiven children of God, marked by the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Let us pray: God, you show us how to live, die, and rise again through Jesus Christ as our savior. As disciples, make us a people who are set apart from this world: not for the sake of division, but for sharing a common path of compassion and grace in the cross. Amen.
