Matthew 28:18
"And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”
Throughout the gospels, Jesus challenges the authorities of this world; because all of his work is equal parts spiritual, physical, and political in nature. So when Jesus shows up as the Word in this world, he challenges the powers that dwell here, the leaders that seek to claim us, and the tyrants that would use violence and oppression to own us. Unlike the kings and authorities of this world, who seek to crush their opponents with power, Jesus shows up in a humble manger. He rides a donkey instead of a war horse, and he seeks peace rather than war. God’s authority is so much better and more trustworthy than the broken leadership of this world; and so we place our trust in that might, as our true king.

Let us pray: God, help me to trust in you as my leader. Guide me to walk in the ways of our savior, setting aside all power and might for the peaceful, gentle walk of the good shepherd and lamb. Thank you for using your authority for mercy, justice, and love. Amen.
