Matthew 28:16-20

“And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

What does Jesus mean by ‘the end(s) of the age’? The New Testament Greek shows us that this phrase can be translated as “And behold: I am with you, all the days, until the completion of the age.” Some interpreters understand this as a time when Jesus returns in an apocalyptic ‘second coming.’ Others hear this as a way to understand the final chapter in the story of God’s salvation. As for me, I hear it as a word of promised presence and encouragement: no matter where, no matter when, I am with you. You are never alone.”

Let us pray: God, you promise to remain by our side. Help us to dwell and abide in your presence, just as you dwell and abide within us. Give us good courage on our commission to share your kingdom here, there, and elsewhere. Amen.
