Matthew 28:16-20
"Now the eleven disciples went to the Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped him, but they doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’”
These words, which take place at the very end of Matthew’s gospel, are often called “the great commissioning.” This is because Jesus is blessing and sending his disciples out into the world, equipping them for the ministry of the kingdom of God, and reminding them that they never go on this journey alone. That’s a commission! Here at Peace, like many other churches, we take time each season to commission our many volunteers. Because no matter the variety of task or calling, we know that God is providing you with the gifts and talents of the Spirit, the assurance and presence of Jesus, and the ongoing inspiration and new life of God the Parent. Just like the disciples, we are called and sent by God; and not just after worship each week, but in the smallest, most humble, everyday moments of life.

Let us pray: God, you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
