Acts 2:17-21

17 ‘In the last days it will be, God declares,
that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
and your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams.
18 Even upon my slaves, both men and women,
in those days I will pour out my Spirit,
        and they shall prophesy…
21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

There is a story from the time in the Wilderness that the prophet Joel would have known. God (through Moses) invited the seventy elders of the twelve tribes to meet with God outside of the camp. And when they did, God took some of the Spirit that rested upon Moses and gave it to each of the seventy and they began to prophesy.

Two of the elders who remained in the camp began to prophesy also. Joshua, Moses’ right hand man, thought someone should be sent to stop them, and Moses replied: “I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his Spirit upon them all!” (Numbers 11:29)

Moses’ wish became Joel’s prophecy, and that prophecy became reality on that Sunday long ago, AND every time a person is baptized. We might not be speaking in other languages or prophesying like the elders of Israel, but we have the same Spirit empowering us—as it empowered those leaders long ago—so that we can live out the ministry God has called us to.

And everyone has a ministry… whether it’s to our families, or to our community, or to our congregation. You have the Spirit within you to empower and guide you in your calling to serve Christ.

– Pr. Paul

Holy Spirit, sometimes I don’t see the meaning or purpose of my life. On those days, open my eyes to see how you are working through me to lift the lives of those around me by showing them the love of Christ. Amen.
