Matthew 11:25 

At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants.” 

Just as he has before, Jesus takes this moment in scripture to praise the childlike faith of the little ones. We have many ideas why Jesus does this, from the open-hearted trust of a child, to the vulnerability of a dependent infant. In this moment, Jesus sets up a contrast between those who think that they know how to faithfully follow God, and those who seek humbly to learn how to follow. Jesus has arrived as a prophet, teacher and preacher of the scriptures, and his mission is to be the rabbi of the people. And it turns out that when our hearts are open and willing to receive direction, our lessons are far more easy to learn.

Let us pray: God of wisdom, we pray that you bless us with childlike faith. When we try to master our lives, to control the world around us, or to hold onto inerrant certainty, soften our hearts to know you better. We place our hope, vulnerability, and trust in you. Amen.
