Matthew 11:29-30  

“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” 

Pastor Paul taught me something illuminating about this piece of scripture. Did you know that, in Jesus’ day, when oxen or other beasts of burden were trained to carry large loads, that the younger animals were connected with older, wiser animals by a tool called a “yoke?” The purpose was twofold: the younger oxen would provide their drive and stamina, while the older oxen would provide their knowledge and pacing. Together, sharing the weight of the yoke, they would be able to complete the hard work together. Wow! I think that we have a lot of wisdom to learn from God’s many and beloved creatures. Both in how we are yoked in our work other human beings, but also, how Christ takes up the yoke to work with us.

Let us pray: God of wisdom, you share knowledge and power with us that we do not deserve. We thank you for leading us into a kingdom that knows lighter burdens and easier rest. Heal us when we feel tired or alone, and restore us to a life yoked together. Amen.
