Matthew 11:28 

“Come to me, all you who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” 

If Jesus’ first voice was frustrated and impatient, then he makes a marked tone shift now to compassion and tenderness. Perhaps Jesus realized that a word of judgement would be better received when paired with a word of reassurance? That would be a good reminder for all of us when we need to give or receive hard feedback with others. Regardless, it is the word that Jesus shares now that bring the most comfort of all: a promise that God cares for us in our struggles, assists us when we need help, and promises to restore us after. There is a reason why this verse is beloved to many in the Bible! We certainly go through many hard burdens and feel weary. It is healing to know that, just as certain, God is with us, helping to carry that burden, and follows that work with healing and rest after.

Let us pray: God of rest, we pray that you meet us on our weary road, and you show us to pathways of newness of life. When we feel as though we cannot take another step, restore us to health and hope once again. We trust in you, and pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
