Matthew 14:13-14 

13 Now when Jesus heard [about John the Baptist’s execution], he withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick. 

It would be so easy to pass over this verse, yet it opens a beautiful window into the heart of Jesus. He was carrying sorrow, seeking solitude, and no doubt weary in spirit. Still, when he saw the crowd, he did not turn away. He was moved with compassion. Even in his own grief, his heart remained open to the hurting, and he ministered to their needs. 

My first instinct would be to say, “No more. I am done.” But Jesus shows us another way. At great personal cost, he delayed the quiet he needed and chose love. In him we see compassion that is not convenient or easy, but holy, generous, and deeply faithful.

 Lord Jesus, like the disciples, the more time I spend with you the more I see the nature of your heart. And the more I am called to be like you. Stir up compassion in me so I can be like you. Amen.
