Matthew 14:13 

13 Now when Jesus heard [about John the Baptist’s execution], he withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place by himself. 

We often forget just how fully human Jesus is. When he received the distressing news of John the Baptist’s execution, he stopped what he was doing and sought out a quiet place to grieve and process what had happened. 

That response is deeply understandable. We have all seen moments when someone receives news so painful that no one expects them to simply keep working as usual. Some grief requires space, silence, and time. 

Jesus’ withdrawal from ministry shows how deeply this news affected him. According to Luke’s Gospel, John was a relative of Jesus. But John was more than family; he was also part of God’s plan, the one sent to prepare the way for Jesus. 

John’s violent death must have carried a terrible significance. It confirmed that the path ahead for Jesus would also lead toward suffering and violence. The time of darkness was drawing near.
