John 14:5-7

Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

This is a beautiful scripture verse. Unfortunately, it often gets taken out of its context. Without Thomas’ question, Jesus can sound like he is making a statement of exclusivity: only a few perfect people, on a narrow perfect path, can be accepted into God’s kingdom. However, that is certainly not what we have witnessed in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. God as Jesus reveals to us a wide welcome and invitation to life! All across the scriptures, Jesus shows us how to love one another as God loved us—friends, strangers, even enemies! So when Jesus makes a statement about being the Way, Truth and Life, we know that he is inviting us to journey on that path with him. Not as a way to keep someone out--but as a way to welcome everyone in. That’s great news, for us and for all people!

Let us pray: Jesus, thank you for inviting us all into your kingdom family. Help us to share that good news and invitation with everyone, everywhere, that we encounter. Amen.
