John 14:2

“In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?”

On the occasions when I do a funeral, this scripture is most often requested. Perhaps it is because this comforting word offers us a reminder that God dwells with us in both life and death, in this world and the next. Yes, it is difficult for us to let go of the physical world around us: our bodies, our homes, our families, and our mortal flesh are beloved and familiar treasures to us. But it is also a comfort to remember that whatever changes, whatever we need to let go, God’s presence is something that never departs from us. And whether heaven is a spiritual place, a physical world, or something both and in between, we can take heart in the promise that God is with us in this prepared place.

– Pr. Alex

Let us pray: Jesus, thank you for going ahead to prepare a place for us. Help us to remember that you value our wholeness of body, mind, and spirit. Amen.
